Remodelling a Kitchen

Having the kitchen remodelled is an easy solution that can add significant value to the home. A remodelling project can be a simple process that cost nearly a few hundred dollars, or can cost tens of thousands to fully modernise many of the outdated components in the house. Homeowners often select a kitchen remodel as the ideal home improvement solution for maximising the benefits of the home. There are easy ways of remodelling the kitchen, as detailed below.

Planning the Project

One of the quickest ways to get an idea of exactly how much a kitchen remodel cost is to visit the local home improvement retail store. Many of them will have a variety of kitchen components on display, where the homeowner can compare the quality of appliances, counter tops and cabinets.

Simply write down the available prices on the types of components, cabinets, flooring, and counter tops you desire. Next, you can factor in exactly how much the labour will cost, which usually represents nearly 40% of the cost of the materials.

Changing the Flooring

There is a large assortment of flooring options available when remodelling the kitchen. These include hardwood, laminate, linoleum, tile, polished concrete and even outdoor carpet. The linoleum fabricated today is far more appealing than the flooring in your grandmother’s home. There is a huge array of laminates available that look identical to hardwood that hold up significantly better and have nearly no maintenance requirements.

The Financing

By obtaining the correct numbers above, you can easily determine whether or not you can realistically afford to spend or borrow the money to have the outdated kitchen remodelled. It may require financing, or extending a line of credit on the equity of the home. You might be able to have the job performed in piecemeal, where the cabinets and counter tops are remodelled, but the floor is added at a later date. Check with the bank to determine exactly how much money can be borrowed on a home equity loan to begin the project.

Updating the Cabinetry

The cabinets in the kitchen might not need to be replaced, but simply re-faced. Instead of purchasing new cabinets, new doors can be added and the cabinet boxes can be resurfaced with a laminate or wood material. Many times the cabinets are still in good condition, and it is only the doors that are outdated.

New lighting

The quickest way to beautify any kitchen is to change out the lighting. This might include adding a ceiling fan with lights, recessed lights, sconces and even chandeliers. There is a huge assortment of available lighting to meet any budget.

Counter Top Material

Selecting the best type of counter top material can be challenging. There is a huge assortment of options available including granite, marble, tile, and synthetic materials in a variety of colours, styles and strengths.

Remodelling the kitchen is a phenomenal home remodel project that can transform the interior of the home. Some contractors will require a complete gut of the entire area, while others can simply add new components to the existing kitchen.

Making Plumbing Bathtub Repairs

Like every other plumbing component in the home, the bathtub valves can easily become worn out over time. This often results in extensive repairs when they are not properly addressed in a timely fashion. A leaky faucet can cause significant damage behind the walls, and an inoperable drain can be the results of an underlying problem that is significantly greater than clogging hair.

Typically, the issues with the plugged up drain in the bathtub, or valves that will not work, are the most common problems involving the bathtub plumbing. Typically, minor repairs can be made by a do-it-yourself homeowner using just basic plumbing skills, and a few simple tools. Many of the components needed to fix the bathtub plumbing can be purchased at the local home improvement store or any store that specialises in plumbing supplies. More advanced plumbing problems might require significant technical repairs performed by a professional plumber.

Faucet Repair

Before beginning any type of bathroom plumbing repair, it is essential to make sure that the water supply has been turned off. Typically, the water supply to the bathtub is located behind the faucet wall of the bathtub. If that is inaccessible, it will require turning off the water supply to the entire house (either in the basement, or located just outside) to ensure minimal leaking during the process.

Next, the faucet handle will need to be removed, which simply requires a small Phillips head screwdriver. Remove the handles by sliding them off the faucet stems. Next unscrew the faucet’s stem collars and remove the escutcheon plates that are typically made of chrome and used to hide the openings for the handles, the shower head and the spout.

Next, unscrew the faucet valve stems using an adjustable wrench. When the valve stem has been removed, you will need to unscrew the old washer and replace it with the new packing provided from the home improvement store or hardware store. Once the new packing has been installed, just reverse the process and thread the stem back into the valve. Put the escutcheon’s back on, followed by the stem collars and finally the handles. Be sure and turn the water on slowly to ensure that the valve has been tightened completely. If the faucet is still leaking, it likely requires professional repair.

Unclogging a Drain

By removing the screen or plug at the bottom of the bathtub, it is possible to see visible debris and hair that is clogging up the drain. The process of removing these components can be messy and better performed by wearing rubber gloves. If that does not unclog the drain, feed a bathtub drain snake through the opening of the drain hole and turn it to grab whatever is blocked farther down the line. Try to avoid using harsh chemicals as they can cause significant damage to the drainpipe.

Making plumbing bathtub repairs is a simple process, when the problem is minimal. However, when the faucet will not stop leaking, or the tub simply will not drain, consider hiring a professional plumber to tackle this home improvement job.

How To Choose The Perfect Carpeting For Your Home

Carpeting can become the perfect addition to your home as it provides a luxurious feel to your haven and it is the perfect way to absorb sound. It is not an easy task when it comes to choosing the perfect carpet, as it can become an overwhelming process. Some types of materials demand a high price and others just simply won’t fit your way of life. Find the perfect carpeting for your needs by considering how to choose the perfect carpet.

Consider your lifestyle needs first

Carpet comes in a myriad of styles ranging from plush, Saxony, Berber, frieze and textured. Instead of focusing on how well that carpet looks in your home, consider your lifestyle needs first.  If you make the wrong choice, your carpeting can exhibit signs of footprints or even wear from a vacuum cleaner.

Purchase from a high quality store that deals in carpeting

Always purchase your carpeting from a reputable establishment and one that specialises in only carpeting. A high quality store that deals in carpeting will have hundreds of options for you to choose from and will have staff on hand to help you make good decisions. It is also important that you receive quality installation with your purchase. An inferior job can leave your carpet looking bumpy, worn or can obviously display the seams.

Find a carpet with high quality padding

Carpeting needs high quality padding under it, much like a home needs a solid foundation. When it comes to padding, make sure you buy high quality and don’t skimp on the costs. Sub floor imperfections are easily concealed when you choose the right type of padding, may it be rubber or foam. Padding is very important as it is the barrier that prevents your carpet backing and fibres from coming loose over the years.

Compare different prices

Don’t blow your entire budget on just carpeting, and there is no reason why quality carpeting should cost you a fortune. Comparison shop before making your final decision about purchasing a certain type of carpeting. When contacting speciality stores, always ask for the price of materials to be broken down separately from the installation costs. Choose different carpets for each room in your home because a high traffic area shouldn’t have the same type of carpeting as your rarely used bedroom.

Buy a carpet that is easy to maintain

Stick to buying carpeting that is easy to maintain, especially if you have pets. Your pets and kids can make a mess, so choose stain-resistant carpeting that is easy to clean up. Don’t commit to buy a carpet before you ask a salesperson about the maintenance of it. Keep in mind that the type of texture a certain type of carpeting has can make an impact on the amount of maintenance your carpet will require.

Too many people make poor decisions when it comes to choosing carpeting that will last years in their homes. One poorly made decision can cost you a lot of money, especially over the years as your carpeting wears thin or looks less than desirable. Instead of buying a carpet that doesn’t look good in your home, or doesn’t fit your lifestyle, use the advice from this article to your advantage.

Product Review- Sleep Innovations Memory Foam Mattress

Hi everyone! Today I thought I would share a product review with you as I recently bought the sleep Innovations memory foam mattress. This is the first time my husband and I have tried out a memory foam mattress and I thought I would share some of my experiences with you.

In terms of comfort, I would rate this mattress as a definite 10 out of 10. As soon as you lie on it, the mattress seems to contour itself to your shape. It’s always a perfect fit and makes it so easy to fall asleep. The mattress is also nice and firm so you don’t sink into it. Research shows that firm mattresses are actually better for your back and they give you better support. When I was previously using a soft mattress, I found myself having a lot of problems with my back.

Many customers who have bought this product have said that memory foam mattresses get too hot in summer. Personally I haven’t had a problem with this and neither has my husband. I find that it is still very comfortable in summer and doesn’t add to the heat.

With two people sleeping on the bed, this one is unlike all the others and does not sink with movement. You get a really peaceful sleep even when your other half is tossing and turnings. The comfort of the mattress lulls you into a deep sleep, leaving you refreshed for the next day.

We have had this mattress for a few months, but have heard a lot of good reviews about it’s quality and that they can last for many years without sinking. The only issue I’ve had with it is that the bed comes with a foam smell that sticks around for the first couple of weeks. This smell however, went away with time and was not a huge problem.

Overall, I would rate this mattress as a 9/10 as it is made from top-of the range materials, comfortable and an absolute bargain for your money.

The Complete Guide To Waterbeds And Bedroom Stuff

Waterbed

ˈwɔːtəbɛd/

noun

a bed with a water-filled rubber or plastic mattress.

The waterbed is among one of the most popular choices for people when they are choosing a new bed. Some vouch for its comfort, others for the excellent support to your spinal chord, but I would vouch for both.

There are two types of waterbeds- hard sided and soft sided. Hard-sided waterbeds use a wooden frame with a chamber of water inside. A soft-sided waterbed looks like the traditional spring bed. But instead of springs, there is a water chamber inside of a foam frame.

Compared to the usual innerspring beds waterbeds can last for a longer time. If you get punctures or leaks in your mattress, this can be easily repaired with most waterbeds lasting between 12-15 years. Beds with water mattresses give great support for your back as it contours closely to your body. This means there is reduced pressure on your body and it is often more comfortable.

Another advantage of waterbeds is that it has been proven to help reduce back pain. And helps improve posture.

However, some downsides to waterbeds are that they are extremely heavy (sometimes weighing close to 900 pounds). Another issue is initially setting up the bed as it is more complex and takes a longer time.

Some trusted brands of water mattresses include:

Innomax

Their 90% waveless waterbed mattress comes at an affordable price and great quality.

Comfort Craft

Their evolution mattress comes with fabric freshness and is highly durable.

Boyd

The Lumbar Supreme model is super comfortable with 5 layers of soft wave reduction. It also comes with a conditioning kit to maintain your bed.
